Why are so many women and girls turning to drugs?

Почему так много женщин и девушек обращаются к наркотикам? The number of women addicted to drugs has increased dramatically over the past three decades, and statistics show that adolescent girls and young women aged 12 to 20 are more likely to start drinking as minors, to drink too much alcohol or to abuse prescription drugs and stimulants than boys of the same age.

Pressure on women who want a family and a career, while often remaining the main carers and housewives, which means that in the days just do not have enough hours!

An unrealistic portrayal of the ideal body in the media - some women resort to medication to lose weight and look a certain way.
Later in life, an increasing number of older women use alcohol and tablets to help cope with the side effects of menopause—fatigue, insomnia, irritability, and other changes in the body.
In addition, more women of all ages are self-medicating with alcohol and drugs because of underlying mental health problems, including depression and anxiety.
Other shocking and incredibly sad statistics show the number of women who turn to drugs because of trauma and/or rape. Studies show that 37% of female drug abusers have experienced violence in childhood, and 75% of female drug abusers have experienced sexual violence - 45% of them more than once.
Other factors that should be noted are
✔ Women tend to get used to substances more quickly by taking smaller doses.
✔ Women are more likely to experience serious physical health problems. Female bodies often fail in the same way as male bodies.
✔ Women tend to have a greater craving for drugs; scientists are not sure whether this is a medical sign or whether it is women's reaction to triggers, stress, and anxiety.
✔ Women have a higher risk of recurrence - even after treatment is completed successfully. To combat this, it is important to put in place a strong postoperative care program and support structure.

Risk factors for drug abuse in women

Факторы риска злоупотребления наркотиками у женщин A recent study by the National Center on Drug and Substance Abuse at Columbia University found that girls and young women typically begin to abuse substances during these critical years. Often, the reasons they try drugs are related to the stress and pressure experienced during this transition. Sometimes the causes of drug use by young women go deeper.

The study found that the causes of early drug use among women are very pronounced at a young age and very different from the causes of drug use among young men. The study also found that women on average become addicted more quickly and suffer the consequences of drug use earlier than men. Moreover, young women are at greater risk of drug abuse and addiction.

Why do girls and young women use drugs in adolescence? What are the risk factors for drug use among women? And what steps can we, as parents and educators, take to prevent this? The following seven factors are the leading causes of drug use among girls and young women.

1. Depression and mental illness

Депрессия и психические заболевания< Depression is not uncommon among adolescent girls. More than one-third of high-school girls report regular feelings of sadness or hopelessness. These girls are more likely than boys to think of suicide (23.6 per cent versus 14.2 per cent) and to attempt suicide (11.2 per cent versus 6.2 per cent). Substance abuse and mental illness, such as depression, often go hand in hand. Depressed and suicidal young women often self-medicate with drugs, increasing the risk of drug dependence.

2. History of Injury

Among all adolescents treated for drug abuse, almost twice as many girls as boys report sexual or physical abuse during their lives. Girls who have been physically or sexually abused are also twice as likely to smoke, drink and use drugs as those who have not been abused in childhood.

3. Stress and inability to cope with it

Стресс и неспособность с ним справиться Whereas men tend to bear their stress outward through aggression and delinquency, women tend to bear their reactions to stress inward. In most cases of extreme stress, young women become depressed and withdrawn. According to the survey, 41 per cent of young women consider the inability to cope with stress as the main cause of drug use. Stressful life events may include death or illness in family or friends, divorce by parents, a change in school or relationship, and a move from house to house.

4. Low self-esteem

Low confidence often accompanies adolescence. This is especially true for girls. Body image and social image are often top priorities for high school girls who want to fit in. They associate weight loss with beauty and popularity. They associate alcohol, drugs and smoking with being sexy, fashionable and cool. They believe that drugs are the answer to their problems. Adolescent girls with low self-esteem are ??twice as likely as those with higher self-esteem to report using drugs. Not only are high school girls twice as likely to diet and behave unwell as boys, but they are also more likely to use drugs or alcohol to control their weight.

5. Social pressure

One study found that many adolescent girls start using drugs to avoid being singled out. Another study of girls between the ages of 11 and 13 showed that the most "popular" girls felt even more pressured to smoke, drink and try drugs. According to the report, the more friends a girl has who smoke, drink or use drugs, the more likely she is to do the same herself. If five close friends drink alcohol, she is more than seven times more likely to start drinking.

6. Academic pressure

High school is undoubtedly a time of great academic pressure for young women. It is the time that matters most to colleges, and the time when students are reaching a new, mature level of learning. But education and drug abuse can easily (and dangerously) be intertwined. Adolescents who achieve excellent and good grades at school are half as likely to be drug users as adolescents with poor academic performance.

7. Lack of communication between parents and children

Отсутствие общения между родителями и детьми One of the most important things a parent can do to prevent their daughter from using drugs is just to communicate. If you think your teenager is at risk of starting to use drugs, talk to her about the consequences of drug use and its possibilities. Teach her to say no. Tell her about the risks of drug use.

Studies have shown that most girls who talk to their parents about alcohol or drug use are reportedly less likely to smoke, drink or use drugs. More than 50 per cent of these girls reported that the conversations helped them learn something new about alcohol or illicit drugs that they did not yet know. However, lack of communication or relationship between the girl and her parents may lead to earlier initiation of alcohol use and a greater likelihood of drug abuse among young women.

Young women who abuse drugs do so for very different reasons than the mean ones. While men use drugs for sensations or social purposes, women are more likely to use drugs to cope with problems, relieve negative feelings, relieve tension, increase confidence, improve sex, and lose weight. It is for these reasons that gender-specific treatment is a necessary consideration when considering treatment programs for your daughter.

The main thing is to resist the temptation to try! They, too, thought that a light drug was nothing to be afraid of, that they could always quit. Most drug addicts start their journey with light drugs. Only 10% of drug addicts are cured. People who use heavy drugs survive, on average, only to age 28. Life is not the name that turns the tongue. Take care of yourself and your children.
